Tennessee Titans Earn First Pre-Season Win Over Arizona Cardinals 24-10

In a game reminiscent of the 2006 BCS National Championship game, Vince Young got the better of Matt Leinart, only this time on an NFL field. The Titans earned their first win of the pre-season at home on LP field. After a disappointing start to the 2009 season, the Titans finished strong, but missed the playoffs with an 8-8 record. USA friendly sportsbooks had set the Titans as betting favorites in Monday night’s game.

Leinart ended up completing four of his six passes, but couldn’t lead the team on a scoring drive in his limited allotted time on the field. Derek Anderson is currently his biggest competition for the starting job after Kurt Warner retired in the offseason. With Warner, the Cardinals finished with the best record in the NFC West at 10-6.

The first four offensive possessions ended in punts before Young led the Titans down the field on an 85-yard scoring drive. Chris Johnson finished off the drive with a run behind the right tackle eight yards for the touchdown. Johnson is looking to improve upon his 2,006-yard rushing performance from last season. That concluded the scoring for the first quarter.

Young continued a 64-yard drive from the end of the first quarter that ended in a Rob Bironas field goal. Anderson led the Cardinals on their first scoring drive from the Arizona 37-yard line. A deep pass to Stephen Williams set up the Jay Feely field goal. Williams is trying to make a stacked wide receiver depth chart according to the 2010 Arizona Cardinals season preview. The quarter ended on an Arizona punt out of bounds.

Chis Wells started the game for the Cardinals in the second half, but didn’t look as impressive as some expected. Kerry Collins led Tennessee on its second touchdown drive of the game and Samkon Gado rushed the ball into the endzone from four yards out. Collins is second on the Titans quarterback depth chart when examining the 2010 Tennessee Titans season preview. Arizona’s punter Ben Graham dropped the snap that allowed the Titans to start the drive on Arizona’s 15-yard line. Gado added another touchdown run to put the Titans ahead 24-3. The quarter ended when Max Hall threw an interception to Tennessee third-stringer Nick Schommer.

Hall redeemed himself by leading the Cardinals on their only touchdown drive of the game from his own 15-yard line. LaGarrette Blount finished off the game for the Titans at running back and earned the most rushing yards among tailbacks in the game.

Bodog sportsbook had set the Titans as 3 1/2 point favorites in the game against the Cardinals, a number they covered. The 34 total points scored in the game stayed under the 37 1/2 over/under.
