Bet-at-Home reports 35% annual revenue increase

The French online gambling group Mangas Gaming’s Bet-at-Home internet casino and sports betting subsidiary reports that its Q1/2010 gross earnings have reached €13.8 million, a 35% rise on the comparable period in 2009.

Profit before tax rose 38% to €2.6 million while it held assets worth €25.4 million at the end of March, an 18% year-on-year increase.

Management revealed that turnover was up by just over 76% year-on-year to €314.5 million with gross gaming revenues growing by 54% compared to the first quarter of 2009 to €13.8 million.

“With increased marketing expenses of €6.7 million in the first quarter of 2010, a rise of 8.9% in comparison to first quarter of 2009, a further strengthening of the Bet-At-Home.com brand has been reached in many European countries, with the number of registered users reaching 1.9 million,” Management reported.

“Due to excellent revenue development, EBITDA significantly increased from €250,000 for the first quarter of 2009 to €2.61 million for the first quarter of 2010.”

Roethlisberger Runs With First Team Despite Suspension

The Pittsburgh Steelers opened up training camp on Saturday with a lot of uncertainties at quarterback heading into the 2010 NFL season. One thing is for sure though, they will be without their stating signal caller Ben Roethlisberger for possibly up to six games to begin the year. That leaves Byron Leftwich and Dennis Dixon to lead a team that finished 9-7 a year ago.

Despite missing all of spring and serving a suspension to begin the season, Roethlisberger played with the first string on the opening day of camp. Head coach Mike Tomlin warned that he will not be locked in with a set rotation at quarterback this summer.

New Jersey Governor Christie Opts Out of Sports Betting Suit

Citing other pressing issues including the current economic crisis, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has opted to back out of a lawsuit that promises to bring millions of dollars in revenue to the state.

Romania and Moldova consider regulating online gambling

Online gambling is apparently high on the agenda of Eastern European nations Romania and Moldova, primarily to generate tax revenues for the state, reports the publication Mediafax.

In Romania, Finance Ministry secretary of state Bogdan Dragoi, told Mediafax that online gambling might be regulated and authorised as a way to attract considerable sums of money to the national budget. The Finance Minister indicated that he wants to have an investigation carried out in a market where it is estimated that Romanians wager up to €500 million on online gambling sites.

The minister revealed that last year Romania amended the law regulating traditional gambling and increased gambling authorisation taxes, which triggered revenues totaling 550 million lei (€1=RON4.1756), compared to 120 million in 2008.

Greg Raymer eliminated on WSOP Main Event day 1a

Monday afternoon saw the start of the first heat of the 41st World Series of Poker Main Event kick off as 1,125 entrants for Day 1a action assembled at the Rio in Las Vegas. There will be three other Day 1′s as the field is reduced through to two Day 2′s and then the survivors are consolidated into one highly competitive field in Day 3.

Former WSOP Main Event champ Greg Raymer was given the honour of making the first ‘shuffle up and deal’ call, which he did with minimum fuss, saying simply: “We’re not gonna waste any time here. Let’s shuffle up and deal!”

Thailand: over 1100 arrested in initiative to halt World Cup betting

Thailand has joined other Asian states such as China, Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia in cracking down hard on the rising tide of internet betting as the football World Cup in South Africa reaches the final eight teams.

Police spokesmen report that more than 1,100 punters in Bangkok have been arrested in a series of drives against illegal football gambling since the World Cup began on June 11.

Over three weeks, police have also arrested 27 illegal bookmakers and 29 punt runners in addition to 1,156 punters, who made bets totalling Bt 3,434,960.
