Court: PokerStars ads violated New Zealand law

Posted by admin | Casino News | Monday 6 December 2010 10:57 pm

The advertising department of PokerStars has had a rough time lately. First Germany banned a television commercial for being too violent and misrepresenting the experience of visiting a brick and mortar casino within the country. Now New Zealand’s highest court has ruled that their advertisements in South Pacific nation are illegal.

In New Zealand, gambling online for real money is only legal if done with the Totalisator Agency Board (TAB), the partially state-run monopoly. New Zealand citizens are not allowed to gamble with any other websites, including overseas operators. T

Charity Casino Tournaments

Not everyone has a positive opinion of the gambling industry. Recent events such as the Betfair controversy certainly don’t help. Any time someone is caught embezzling from his employer to pay for his gambling habit, that doesn’t help, either. It’s true that there are some people gambling who should stay away from casinos. And it’s true that sometimes companies behave improperly, whether they are a bank, retail store, phone company, car dealership or casino. It’s part of human nature. While some people exhibit the bad side of human nature, an awful lot of people exhibit the good side. Likewise,

Internet gambler Dinesh Enoka Abeysuriya (29), described by his lawyer as a “lonely and depressed” Sri Lankan on an Australian work visa, has pleaded guilty to embezzling a Queensland charity out of A$1.5 million.

The Brisbane Times reports that Abeysuriya was a finance clerk working for the Blue Care aged care health charity when the offences occurred. Between March 2009 and April 2010 he is alleged to have fraudulently channelled the money to his own accounts, disguised as payments to Blue Care creditors.

Evidence was given to the Brisbane District Court that he spent most of the cash on Centrebet, a sports gambling website, which colleagues noticed he accessed at work.

Abeysuriya was exposed when a bank clerk noted the large amounts of money flowing into his bank account, and he absconded back to Sri Lanka when his crimes were discovered.

In an attack on the British Columbia Provincial Government based on the failure of the online gambling site, Playnow.com which launched in July 2010, an NDP opposition politician this week claimed to have documentary evidence that the failure was due to a rushed contract.

The state, already mired in unlikely court actions to seize international domain names belonging to internet gambling companies had earlier this year brought an action seeking to recoup funds lost by state residents at major internet gambling sites like Full Tilt Poker owners Pocket Kings.

Online casinos offering atypical bonuses

Online casinos like to hold promotions and give away bonuses in order to encourage people to join their site and play there often. It makes sense and pretty much every casino does it. While most are good deals, the money being offered as match bonuses or cash-back bonuses tends to blend together. Since I write about promotions so often, it takes a lot to grab my attention. That’s why I like it when casinos offer unusual or odd promotions.

My favorite promotions of the past have to be when InterCasino was giving away free trips into space and when Golden Tiger Casino gave away real Bengal tigers. Yes, I mean the real animal, which is one of the most dangerous animals on the planet. I
