Atlantic Lottery Corporation retreats from internet gambling plan

The trend amongst Canadian provinces for provincial lottery organisations to launch online gambling services was disrupted this week by the announcement this week from The Atlantic Lottery Corporation that it will not be offering internet gambling to the residents of the five provinces that it serves, namely; Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island.

It is not yet known whether The Atlantic Lottery made this decision unilaterally or whether it presented a proposal which was rejected by the provinces concerned.

Earlier this year the provinces of Quebec and British Columbia announced their intention to enter the online gambling sector with British Columbia, the first off the mark with its PlayNow site.

French licensed operators bemoan high taxation and low payouts

The Monaco iGaming conference in Monte Carlo is generating interesting perspectives and opinions on the recently liberalised French market, and the perceived problems of high taxation and low limits on player payouts.

This week the newly appointed chief executive of 888.com’s b2b arm Dragonfish, David Zerah opined that the taxation being imposed on French-licensed operators had probably gone a little too far and could detract from the advantages of entering the French market from a profits point of view.

He wasn’t the only one; Alexandre Dreyfus of the ChiliGaming group said that although the industry was glad to see a more progressive approach from the French, it was desirable that casino games be included in the licensing spectrum, and that taxation be reduced.

Mixed feelings on proposed Dutch legalisation of online gambling

Wednesday’s De Telegraaf newspaper speculation that the incoming coalition government in Holland could be about to legalise online gambling has been followed by widespread reaction in the European country. Radio Netherlands reports that, regardless of its presently illegal status, some 500,000 Dutch residents regularly gamble online, mainly with offshore operators.

A spokesman for the state’s land casino monopoly Holland Casino told the radio station that it would like to operate a legal internet gambling site as a response to illegal offshore competition.
